Cathie Cresswell

Biography

Cathie started her professional career in 2008 whilst living in the remote town of Newman, Western Australia. She was commissioned to create 2 large scale artworks for BHP Billiton Iron Ore in collaboration with fellow artist, Emma Valente. Moving to Karratha in 2010, Cathie continued her public art career, being commissioned by various organisations including the City of Karratha and Town of Port Hedland. Cathie moved to Perth in 2015 to study Art Therapy where she undertook various teaching artist roles and continued to enter personal works in exhibitions. For seven years she practiced as a registered art therapist, providing arts-based mental health & well-being support to children and adults. In 2024, she decided to return to her professional arts practice, being employed as teaching artist at the Art Gallery of WA and now as an Art Technician & Arts Educator in school and community.

Artist Statement

My work is inspired by the theme of 'humans as fragile organisms', exploring emotional experiences & physical connections in human relationships with self and other. I experiment with the qualities of materials such as clay, wire, paint, and textiles to explore how these materials can resonate with human experiences and the fragility of the ego and spirit.
